How Do I Get Involved?
Organizations are constantly seeking new energy, a familiar refrain we hear
is that the same people are involved with a lot of things and don't have enough
time to commit to the group. Here are some things to consider when getting
involved.
- What is important to you?
Was there an activity in high school that really enriched your life, and
would you like to continue your involvement?
- Find an organization that fits
your values: Read the mission statements of student organizations
that interest you listed on the Allegheny Website. See how they correlate
with your personal interests, passions, and goals.
- Network with other students:
Ask upperclass students like your peer leader (pL's), resident assistant
(RA's), and teammates, about their involvements. They may have information
about other groups that could be helpful. Remember to use this information
judiciously as everyone has varying personal opinions.
- Find out about meeting times:
Meeting times and locations for individual organizations are listed in the
Student Organization database. Ask a student organization member if you
can accompany them, or find the meeting yourself. Most organizations have
an open door policy.
- Utilize the Student Organization database
and the Compass: The contact information for all
organizations is listed in the Student Organization database and in the
back of your student handbook, the Compass. Contact information is listed
for a reason! Drop organization contacts a line and ask them questions.
- Activities Fair: The
Activities Fair is held at the beginning of the Fall semester. Watch for
flyers and check the Master Calendar. These aren't just for first year students!
Pick up information, and ask a lot of questions. You'll find students involved
with groups are happy to discuss their activities.
- Sample a lot, decide on a little:
Following activities fairs, you might be inundated with group e-mails and
flyers about meetings. Attend many of these, but make sure to evaluate what
role the group can play in your life, what you can contribute to the organization,
and the level of intensity with which you would like to be involved. You
should then "whittle" down your involvements to ensure you are
living a balanced life.
- Investigate: When researching
organizations, ask about their mission, watch their interactions with each
other, introduce yourself, volunteer for a small commitment to see if you
are interested in dedicating more of your time to the organization.
